Samuel Bassett

Samuel Bassett is an English painter from St. Ives in Cornwall. His work has been described by gallerist Joe Clark as 'psychological cubism'. Bassett paints these emotional landscapes that are rooted and representational of his life in Cornwall . They are dream-like and often depict figures that allude to a narrative in text and emotive brush strokes he uses. What draws me to his work is his choice of colours and how soft his images are even though gesturally they are quite frantic and rough.

I really resonate with the text on Bassetts website - an essay written by Jon Sharples called: Second Homes and Other Pathetic Fallacies. I will be expanding on this in Unit 2.
