In my process for choosing images I have some categories:

 

People/objects - narrative images

 

Buildings 

 

Scenery / Backgrounds

 

I like to imagine what it would feel like to paint the image before starting. Whether it would be fun or not. Or cropping it to find the elements that would make the painting more striking.
